Episode 45 of The Cricketers Network - Out Now
The Curious Case of Dr Luke and Mr Ronchi
The latest episode of The Cricketers Network is out now, with Ben Hurley joined by former New Zealand international and outgoing Blackcaps batting coach Luke Ronchi.
Few people have experienced the game from as many different perspectives as Ronchi. Born in New Zealand before moving to Australia, he went on to represent both countries at international level before returning home and becoming an important member of the Blackcaps, including the side that reached the 2015 Cricket World Cup final.
His second chapter has been just as significant. Ronchi has spent the past six years working with the Blackcaps as batting coach, helping guide the team through an enormously successful period that included the World Test Championship title, multiple World Cup finals and the historic 3–0 Test series victory in India.
In a wide-ranging conversation, Ronchi talks about the difference between playing and coaching, what elite players really need from a coach, his relationship with Gary Stead, the temperament of Kane Williamson and what he learned from his own experiences of pressure on the biggest stage.
He also looks ahead to his next challenge, taking over as head coach of the Melbourne Renegades in the Big Bash League.
And to finish, Luke finally answers the question that has carried his name for years on the podcast — the Ronchi Test.
